MURFREESBORO—The MTSU community is offering its collective support through thoughts and prayers for a freshman female student who contracted bacterial meningitis during spring break week. Spring break officially started March 1. At the family’s request, the university is not releasing her name.
The young woman complained of symptoms the following Saturday, March 8, after returning from Florida and was admitted to Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville last Sunday. The incubation period for the illness is from four to 10 days. Currently, the student is showing signs of improvement but remains in the critical care unit.
Bacterial meningitis is an airborne-transmitted illness that can strike anyone at anytime; however, most who are stricken are between the ages of 10 and 30 years, according to CDC guidelines. Students who are immuno-suppressed or overly stressed are especially susceptible.
In collaboration with the Rutherford County Health Department, the university has contacted and treated all students who may have been in close contact with the student during spring break week.
