[143] Pioneering Aulos Ensemble goes for baroque in Nov. 12 MTSU performance

MURFREESBORO — A pioneering period-music group will perform at MTSU’s Wright Music Building and provide master classes to students in the university’s School of Music this month.

The Aulos Ensemble, which blends the sounds of flute, oboe, violin, cello and harpsichord into baroque melodies, is scheduled for a free public performance in Hinton Music Hall at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12.

The next morning at 11:20, the Julliard-trained quintet will share their knowledge with MTSU students — and the public, too — in the master classes.

Their performance, “Masters of the High Baroque,” will include Vivaldi's "Concerto in G minor, RV 107"; Bach's "Trio-Sonata in G major, BWV 525”; Couperin's "8ème Concert dans le goût théatral"; Handel's "Trio-Sonata in D minor, Opus 2, No. 6”; and Rameau's Suite from “Les Indes Galantes.”

"The Aulos Ensemble is not only one of the leading ensembles to perform on original instruments, but through their longevity, they are one of the ‘originals,’ as well,” said Dr. George Riordan, director of the MTSU School of Music.

“Their performances are always full of good-natured vitality and a level of artistry that speaks directly to the heart. This will be a performance that concert-goers will find exciting and memorable."

The Aulos Ensemble was formed in 1973 and released its first album, "Masterpieces of the High Baroque,” in 1978. The ensemble has released more than a dozen recordings on the Musical Heritage Society’s label since then, including dual-CD sets of Bach, Handel and Vivaldi and the complete "Essercizii Musici" of Telemann on five CDs.

Aulos also established its own concert series at home in New York City with special guest artists, along with a tradition of special Christmas concerts in front of the Metropolitan Museum.
