[315] ‘MTSU On the Record’ shows how clergy are ‘Helping the Good Shepherd’

MURFREESBORO — The next edition of the “MTSU On the Record” radio program will explore the integration of psychology into ministerial advising.

Host Gina Logue’s interview with Dr. Susan Myers-Shirk will air from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, and from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan.19, on WMOT-FM (89.5 and www.wmot.org).

Myers-Shirk is the author of “Helping the Good Shepherd,” a book that chronicles the adoption of psychological techniques by pastors from 1925 to 1975 as they counseled their congregations.

“I argue that (their efforts) should not be interpreted as evidence of secularization or as an indication of the decline of liberal Christianity, but as evidence of their eagerness to find some middle ground between the two worlds they saw as most important and relevant,” said Myers-Shirk, an MTSU history professor.
