[473] Spring into good health with MTSU student nurses’ health fair April 3

MURFREESBORO — While you’re organizing your annual spring cleaning, don’t forget to check your health, as well.

The MTSU Student Nurses Association will conduct a health fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in the first floor lobby of the Student Union Building. The event is free and open to the public.

Among the services to be offered are free blood pressure checks, glucose screenings, HIV tests, bone marrow screens, breast exams and testicular exams.

“Our generation is one that can make a difference in our own health,” said Caitlyn Wilson, a senior nursing major from Christiana, Tenn., and a member of the MTSU Student Nurses Association. “We are responsible for ensuring that we, as a nursing profession, educate the public about … maintaining good health.”

In addition, LaShan Mathews, a public health educator with the Rutherford County Health Department, will be on hand to provide her expertise.

Mathews earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a graduate certificate in health care management and gerontology from MTSU. She is scheduled to receive her master’s degree in health from MTSU in May.

“By promoting healthy lifestyles that avoid health risks and educating Tennesseans about the rewards we enjoy when we protect the health of our communities, our families and ourselves, we are all able to enjoy better health,” Mathews said.

Vendors who will have information tables at the fair include Genesis Healing Center, Infinity Birthing Center, the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, Pa Bunk’s Natural Market & Café, MTSU Pharmacy Services, MTSU Health Promotion and the Health & Safety Committee of the MTSU President’s Commission on the Status of Women.
