MURFREESBORO — “Darkness
cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.”
The stirring words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
will illuminate the official observance of his birthday as the MTSU Office of
Intercultural and Diversity Affairs and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. present
a public candlelight vigil from 6-7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at the Keathley
University Center Theater.
Members of Alpha Phi Alpha, of which the late civil rights
leader was a member, will deliver presentations along with Bishop Chris
Johnson, pastor of Zion Christian Ministries in Murfreesboro.
MTSU’s Dance Theatre and the Generation of Praise gospel
choir will lend their talents to the appreciation of King’s commitment to
social activism.
King’s actual birthday was Jan. 15, 1929. In 1983, President
Ronald Reagan signed into law a bill to create an official federal holiday. In
a 1992 proclamation, President George H.W. Bush declared that the holiday would
be observed on the third Monday in January each year.
