[051] On-campus voter registration available at MTSU Honors College Aug. 22

MURFREESBORO — With fewer than 80 days remaining before Election Day, MTSU will offer new and returning college students and others an opportunity to register on campus.

The American Association of University Women’s Murfreesboro chapter will sponsor voter registration from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, at MTSU’s Paul W. Martin Honors College Building. A printable campus map is available at http://tinyurl.com/MTSUParkingMap.

The MTSU American Democracy Project states that only 44 percent of MTSU students were registered to vote in 2012 and only 62 percent of those registered cast votes in that year’s elections.

Those statistics come from MTSU’s participation in the National Study of Learning, Voting and Engagement, which is supported by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning & Engagement at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. MTSU was one of 600 institutions nationwide to take part in the study.

Additionally, Tennessee ranks dead last among all 50 states in voter turnout, according to the most recent report by the Pew Charitable Trusts.
