Regional Scholars Program, Academic Common Market attract Georgia students

MURFREESBORO — Georgia high school students who attend the Middle Tennessee State University True Blue Tour stop in Atlanta Wednesday, Oct. 5, will learn about opportunities for special tuition breaks and scholarships if they choose to become Blue Raiders.

This year’s student and parents’ reception will be held at 6 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Atlanta Perimeter at Ravina, 4355 Ashford Dunwoody Road. At 11:30 a.m. Oct. 5, MTSU entertains Atlanta-area high school counselors and community college staff.

Atlanta is one of 11 True Blue Tour stops as the university recruits prospective high school and transfer students for 2017 and beyond. To register to attend, visit http://www.mtsu.edu/schedule-a-visit/special-events.php.

MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee and interim Provost Mark Byrnes will join other administrators and deans from the university’s eight academic colleges, advisers and counselors from the admissions and financial aid offices on the tour. They will be on hand to answer questions from prospective students, transfer students and their parents at the events.

Georgia students may qualify for in-state tuition at MTSU if they enroll in an academic major not offered in their home state. For Georgia students, Academic Common Market programs include:

• Aerospace.

• The horse science concentration in animal science.

• Concrete Industry Management.

• Video and film production in electronic media communication.

• Forensic science.

• The music industry concentration in the School of music.

• Industrial/organizational psychology.

• Audio production, commercial songwriting and music business in recording industry.

Meanwhile, the Regional Scholars Program — unveiled during the 2015 Atlanta True Blue Tour stop — allows select non-Tennessee resident students who live within approximately 250 miles of MTSU and meet specific academic requirements to attend MTSU at a greatly reduced rate and qualify for the Freshman Academic Merit Scholarships.

Qualifying students receive a reduced tuition rate equal to approximately 48 percent off the standard out-of-state rate. Students participating in the Academic Common Market program may receive even lower rates.
