[016] ‘MTSU On the Record’ introduces new political science department chair

MURFREESBORO — The incoming chair of the MTSU Department of Political Science and International Relations will be the guest on the next “MTSU On the Record” radio program.

Host Gina Logue’s interview with Michael Federici will air from 9:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, and from 6 to 6:30 a.m. Sunday, July 30, on WMOT-FM Roots Radio 89.5 and www.wmot.org.

Federici, a 27-year veteran of academia, will begin his new duties in the fall semester, taking over from Stephen Morris, who returns to teaching. Most recently, Federici was chair of the political science department at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania.

In his 24 years at Mercyhurst, Federici taught courses in American government, international politics and political theory. His books include “The Challenge of Populism” and “The Political Philosophy of Alexander Hamilton.” He also co-edited a collection of essays titled “The Culture of Immodesty in American Life and Politics: The Modest Republic.”

“As time has gone on and the United States has become a larger, more prosperous nation, it has succumbed often to the temptation to act more like an empire than a republic,” said Federici. “The more modest approach is to realize your limitations in politics.”

Federici earned his bachelor’s degree in economics in 1983 from Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, and his master’s and doctoral degrees in politics from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in 1985 and 1990, respectively.
