[393] Stories of sexual assault survival dominate April 18 event at MTSU



MURFREESBORO, Tenn. —Two sexual assault survivors will tell their stories at MTSU in observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

“Written on the Body: A Conversation with Survivors of Sexual Assault” is slated for 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at the MT Center in the Sam Ingram Building, 2269 Middle Tennessee Blvd. in Murfreesboro. This event is free and open to the public.

Off-campus visitors attending the daytime event should obtain a special one-day permit from MTSU’s Office of Parking and Transportation at http://www.mtsu.edu/parking/visit.php.

Lexie Bean and Alex Valdes, two writers featured in the anthology “Written on the Body: Letters from Trans and Non-Binary Survivors of Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence,” will read their work and speak with audience members about their experiences.

Valdes, a Brooklyn, New York, native, is an experimental musician and performance artist. Bean is a writer and performer based in Queens, New York. “Written on the Body” is their third anthology of letters people have written to their body parts. Much of their work revolves around such themes as bodies, homes and cyclical violence.

The “Written on the Body” discussion is sponsored by the Virginia Peck Trust Fund, MTSU Write, the University Writing Center, the MTSU Department of English, the MTSU Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance, the MTSU Intercultural & Diversity Affairs Center, The Lavinia Project and the Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Center of Murfreesboro.
